From Patient to Houstonian: Why We Do This Differently

I'll never forget my first day at MD Anderson. I was 35, with a one-year-old at home, starting a cutting-edge clinical trial for a rare form of breast cancer. Optimistic but nervous doesn't quite capture it - I was running on hope and adrenaline, shuttling between my own appointments and visiting my father-in-law, who was inpatient at the same hospital. Houston wasn't home yet. But it would be.
A few months later, when my first treatment didn't work, my brother and father came to visit. It was March 2020 - right before everything shut down for COVID. They stayed at a short-term rental just blocks from our apartment, and that's when something clicked for me.
During one of the hardest seasons of my life, that rental became a refuge for my family. Not just a place to sleep - a place where they felt cared for while caring for me. Where they could cook a meal, have privacy to process hard news, feel at home while being so far from home. I noticed everything: the comfortable bed after long hospital days, the well-stocked kitchen, the thoughtful touches that said "someone thought about you."
But here's what I didn't expect: I fell in love with Houston.
I grew up in Latin America and Egypt, so I've always been drawn to places with soul and that cosmopolitan energy. Houston welcomed us with open arms - that genuine Southern hospitality combined with people from everywhere. The neighborhoods have this wonderful quirkiness you don't find in cookie-cutter cities. Montrose. The Heights. EaDo. Each one with its own personality. And the food? Coming from such international roots, I felt right at home in a city where you can get world-class Vietnamese pho, authentic Mexican street tacos, and Nigerian suya all in the same week.
Houston stopped being the place I came for treatment and became the place I chose to stay.
This past year, I crossed my five-year mark. I also welcomed my second child - another one-year-old, just like when this journey began, but under such different circumstances. That milestone feels like both an ending and a beginning.
Our small family short-term rental business grew from that experience in 2020 - from understanding what people need when they're far from home, facing uncertainty, or just looking for a place to land. As a mom of two, I design each space thinking about comfort, trust, and care. The family visiting a loved one at the medical center. The business traveler who needs a real kitchen after a long day. The couple exploring this incredible city for the first time.
I pour my heart into these properties because I've been the guest who needed more than just clean sheets. I've been the person who needed to feel cared for in an unfamiliar place.
Houston gave that to me when I needed it most. Our properties are my way of extending that same care forward - with a personal touch, attention to detail, and genuine love for this city that became home.
Welcome to Houston. We're glad you're here.
